A long time ago, a village on the edge of the lake which is called by the residents of Setu Babakan there lived a pair of lovers who love each other dearly but love was forbidden. The maiden’s father despise the young man, Joko because he was a poor farmer.
“You filthy poor farmer! Getaway from my daughter!” said the maiden’s father.
Joko, the farmer boy, in tears but with determination, in his voice he replied “Dik Siti, Father, maybe because I am only from a farming family that you rejected our relationship. I truly deeply love your daughter. In order for you to bless our relationship, I have to become rich, I will go overseas to the city. I hope you can give me your well wishes. And if we are indeed destined, one day we will definitely be together again “.
Accompanied by tears, the poor peasants tried their luck in a foreign country
Three years have passed. There was no news from the young man. Siti, began to be anxious, especially since her father had set her up with a rich widower from the next village.
“Siti, the time has come. You are no longer young! We need a capable man to support our family. You are to marry the widower from the next village.” said Siti’s father.
“Father, have mercy… Joko will be back for me. Please don’t marry me off to others.”, Siti trembled and sat on the foot of her father pleading.
With one glance Siti’s father command, “This is final! No negotiation! You need to serve your family first!”
When the time for her marriage was getting closer, Siti was increasingly nervous. She continued to pray and hope that her ideal young man returns soon. But her hopes remained hope.
Another year has passed no sign of Joko. After trying various ways to postpone her marriage to rich widower, the girl was desperate.
She ran pass the neighbours, the singing children, the woman gossipings and stop at Lake (Setu) Babakan.
She stare at her reflection. Tear drops roll down her eyes. One hand covering her face and the other beating her own chest screaming..”why..why”.. Between sobs.
With a broken feeling she threw herself into the lake. Not far away, the stealth dwellers hears Siti’s sob. They show compassion to Siti’s broken heart. Siti drown in the Lake but was save by the stealth dweller, they cant revive her so they gave her a new lifeform to be the beautiful white crocodile that immersed in the lake. Her purpose is to guard the lake
Until now, the white crocodile is still loyal to guard the lake. if someone is indecent around the lake, then that person will be a victim of the white crocodile Setu Babakan.
That is the story of the folklore of Jakarta about the origins of the existence of a white crocodile in the Setu Babakan region which has now become a cultural heritage area of the Betawi people.
